Sweet Shoppe Party Theme // DIY Mosaic Balloon Number

My sweet daughter, Lea, turned 6 and it felt fitting to throw this girl a Sweet Shoppe themed birthday party.  This old fashioned bakery theme came together easily with a semi-DIY pink and white awning, custom sign, and decked out dessert table.  What I love about this theme is that it’s simple, customizable, and can also be used for a candy or ice cream shop themed party.

Another feature of the party decorations was the DIY mosaic balloon number.  It’s a very impressive and eye-catching addition to any celebration!  It was my first time making it and it was easier than I thought.  It only took me two nights to work on it and I love how it turned out.  The main materials needed are foam boards, balloons, a low temp glue gun, and a number template.  You can have fun with the colors of the balloons and customize the size of the number or letter. My free number and letter template can be found here.

The best part of our Sweet Shoppe themed party was tasting the variety of desserts from local female-owned small businesses in Philadelphia.  These women create such beautiful and delicious sweets!

Decorations

Pink and White Paper Awnings

These 3-D paper awnings are easy to put together and very inexpensive.  They’re only available in red, so I had to change the color to pink to fit the aesthetics of the party.  To do this, I covered the white parts with painter’s tape and painted over the red parts with pink spray paint.

Sign

My sister was kind enough to create this sign with her Cricut.  You can find similar custom signs here.

Dessert Table

I used a 6’ folding table and covered it with this white tablecloth.  To give it some flair, I added these felt pom-pom garlands to the sides of the tablecloth.  For the dessert display, I used this white dessert stand set.  It comes in a set of 12 with a variety of metal stands in a very pretty scallop detail.  I filled the rest of the table with vases of flowers from our local farmer’s market.

Instructions

  1. Print the template making sure you keep all pages in order. The template is set to landscape and not portrait.
  2. Lay the first four pages in a row, then the next four pages below that.  Repeat until you have 7 rows. Tape the printed template together and then cut out the number/letter.
  3. Attach foam boards together with tape and lay the template cutout on top.
  4. Using a pencil, trace the outline of the template onto the foam board.
  5. Use a box cutter/craft knife to cut the outline of the number/letter.  To allow rounded bottom numbers like #3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 0 to stand on their own, you can cut a small portion of the bottoms to make it flat. Alternatively you can cut two large triangles to glue to the back as a makeshift stand.
  6. Make the sides of the number/letter by measuring and cutting 6” strips of foam board with a box cutter.
  7. Use a hot glue gun to attach the 6” strips to the edge of the number foam board. For sides that are curved, use a ruler and box cutter to score the strips of foam board.  Be sure not to cut the foam board completely through.
  8. Inflate the balloons — I find it easiest to use an electric balloon pump or hand pump. I recommend doing this the night before or day of as the balloons can deflate quickly.
  9. Arrange the balloons inside of the number and use a low temperature glue gun to keep them in place.  You can also use glue dots instead of a glue gun.

Floral Buttercream Cupcakes

The most gorgeous flowers I’ve ever seen are these handmade floral buttercream cupcakes.  They’re splitting images of real peonies, daisies, proteas, and dahlias.  They’re not only pretty but very yummy too! These vanilla cupcakes are also gluten-free and organic.  I’m in love with the color palette and overall design of this gorgeous set.

Monogram ‘L’ Cake and Chocolate Chip Cookies

The letter cake trend is my favorite because it’s so beautiful and elegant.  Lea’s ‘L’ cake is a classic vanilla cake with swiss buttercream piping, adorned with fresh florals, macarons, and chocolate balls.  It matched the theme of the party so well and tasted amazing.

Leta’s Baking

Blueberry Cheesecake, Raspberry Chocolate Entremet, Fruit Tart, Thai Tea Condensed Milk Entremet, and Ube Crinkles

I’m blown away by these elevated desserts in the best flavors.  Everything was amazing, but my favorites were the cheesecake and the ube crinkle cookies.  The blueberry cheesecake is a cheesecake mousse filled with a fresh blueberry gelee and topped with a glazed vanilla cookie.  The crinkle cookie has a Flipino twist and is made with ube, a purple yam.

Janette’s Cupcakes

Creme Brulee, Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Fudge Brownie Cupcakes

These are not your average cupcakes — they’re over the top, rich, and so decadent.   Each one was a hit, but the family favorite was the creme brulee cupcake.  It’s a vanilla cupcake filled with custard and topped with caramelized caramel buttercream.

Breakable Chocolate Heart

A rewarding and fun treat for the kids!  This pink floral chocolate heart is filled with candy and comes with a little wooden hammer.  Lea and her cousins took turns smashing the heart and enjoyed eating both the candy and the white chocolate heart shell.
